Documenting the Cave:
Mammoth Cave presents a challenge because it is underground.
Explorers must carefully map where passages are and what they contain.
This a slow, painstaking process using compasses and measuring tapes.
Careful notes are made of geologic structure, water and sediment, cave
life and minerals, and archaeological remains.
For over 50 years, this has been a volunteer effort. Enthusiastic cavers
drive or fly to southcentral Kentucky at their own expense simply because
exploring caves is their passion. The volunteers are affiliated with the Cave
Research Foundation, Central Kentucky Karst Coalition, and nearby Fisher
Ridge Cave’s Detroit Urban Grotto.
